     But the examples of the new power of visual lineality are
innumerable, one of the most curious being the King James
(1611) version of the Lord’s Prayer in which “debt” becomes
“trespass.” The reduction of the multi-levelled idea of “debt”
and duty is thus confined to the written legal meaning, and the
idea of “stepping out of line” is substituted for a complex of
theological and moral implication.
